Do You Know?
India had its own Prime Meridian before the 0° Greenwich longitude was internationally accepted. This line, called the central meridian, was considered to pass through the city of Ujjayini (Ujjain), which was the centre for astronomical studies in India for many centuries. About 1500 years ago, the famous astronomer Varahmihir lived and studied at Ujjain. Indian astronomers understood the concepts of angular distances and longitudes, and realised the need for a zero line or Prime Meridian. The Ujjaini Prime Meridian became the reference point for all Indian astronomical calculations found in ancient Indian astronomical texts.

Ans: The correct option is (B) 1, 2, 3. Statements 1, 2 and 3 are true. Statement 4 is false because all latitudes are not of equal length; the length of latitude circles keeps decreasing as we move away from the Equator towards the poles, and at the poles the latitude reduces to just a point.
