(1) The Work Done by Ahilyabai Holkar
- Punyashloka Ahilyabai Holkar was the wife of Khanderao, the son of Malharrao Holkar.
- After the death of Khanderao, she took charge of the administration of Indore.
- She proved to be a capable and efficient ruler.
- She introduced reforms in agricultural cess and revenue collection and brought order to state administration.
- She encouraged agriculture by digging wells, building lakes and tanks, and promoting trade and industry.
- She constructed temples, ghats, maths, dharmashalas, and drinking water facilities at important pilgrimage centres across India.
- She personally supervised judicial matters and delivered justice fairly.
- She ruled successfully for twenty-eight years and enhanced the prestige of the Marathas in North India.

- He failed to unite the Maratha sardars, and internal conflicts weakened the empire.
- During his reign, Maratha influence in both North and South India declined.
- The British gradually replaced the Marathas as the dominant power in India.
As a result, the Maratha rule eventually came to an end.
