(e) To refer to events, activities and experiences

  4. I have a football practice session in the evening.
  5. The school has a cultural programme every year.

(f) To refer to a physical condition

Ans:

  1. I have a headache today.

  4. He has a cold and cough.
  5. The patient has high blood pressure.

2. Look up the following verbs in a good dictionary. List at least 20 different uses of each.


(1) Uses of ‘Go’

Ans:

  1. To move from one place to another – We go to school every day.
  2. To travel – They went to Delhi by train.
  3. To leave – He has gone out for some work.
  4. To attend – I went to the concert yesterday.
  5. To function – My watch does not go properly.
  6. To proceed – The meeting went smoothly.
  7. To disappear – My wallet has gone missing.
  8. To become – The milk went bad.
  9. To fit into a place – This key goes into that lock.
  10. To be sold – The old books went for a low price.

(2) Uses of ‘Get’

Ans:

  1. To receive – I got a gift from my friend.
  2. To obtain – She got good marks in the exam.
  3. To bring – Please get me a glass of water.
  4. To become – The weather is getting cold.
  5. To arrive – We got home late at night.
  6. To understand – Did you get the joke?
  7. To catch – He got a cold during winter.
  8. To persuade – I got him to help me.
  9. To reach – How will we get to the station?
  10. To escape punishment – The thief could not get away.

(3) Uses of ‘Put’

Ans:

  1. To place something – Please put the books on the table.
  2. To write – Put your name on the paper.
  3. To express – She put her thoughts into words.
  4. To arrange – He put the files neatly in the cupboard.
  5. To force someone – The teacher put the students to work.
  6. To stop – We must put an end to pollution.
  7. To invest money – He put money into the business.
  8. To blame – Do not put the blame on others.
  9. To wear – She put on a new dress.
  10. To postpone – The meeting was put off till Monday.

(4) Uses of ‘Catch’

Ans:

  1. To capture – The police caught the thief.
  2. To hold something thrown – He caught the ball easily.
  3. To contract a disease – She caught a fever.
  4. To hear – I could not catch what he said.
  5. To reach in time – We caught the last bus home.
  6. To notice – Her smile caught my attention.

  10. To begin burning – The dry leaves caught fire quickly.

(5) Uses of ‘Pass’

Ans:

  2. To hand over – Please pass the salt.
  3. To spend time – We passed the evening happily.
  4. To succeed – She passed the examination with good marks.
  5. To approve – The government passed a new law.
  6. To die – His grandfather passed away peacefully.
