📜 Paraphrase of the Poem

In the poem, a bird describes its various homes. The bird says that it first lived very nicely in a little house, which was small, round, and made of a pale blue shell. The bird next lived in a small nest, quite content in it and not needing another one. It thought its whole world was made of the straw surrounding it, and it was kept warm by its mother’s body.

One day, says the bird, it flew unsteadily out of the nest to see what it could find. It thought that it had been blind before, but now it realized that the world was made of leaves. It then flew beyond the tree and saw the vast blue sky. It began to wonder how the world was really made. It did not know — and it asks if the reader knows.

Home 1 — The Egg

Small, round, and pale blue. The bird’s very first home.

Home 2 — The Nest

Made of straw. Warm and cosy under the mother’s body.

Home 3 — The Tree

The bird flies out and sees a world full of green leaves.

The world around the bird’s nest is vast. It includes the green leaves of a tree and an open blue sky stretching far above.

What the World Looks Like to a Baby

The world of a baby consists of its mother, father, and a few other family members. A baby’s world includes a crib, the walls of the room where it stays, its crib toys, the window, the blue sky, and the streets full of people. Since a baby is very little, the world looks big and exciting to it.

What the World Looks Like to a Fish

The world looks blue to a fish, since it is an aquatic animal surrounded by water. Coral reefs and underwater plants of various types make the world of a fish very colourful and full of wonder.
