Chapter 6 – Importance of Oceans

(A) Find the odd man out.

(1) Shell, fish, crab, ship

Ans: Ship

Shell, fish, and crab are natural resources obtained from the ocean. A ship is a man-made means of transport. Therefore, ship is the odd man out.

(2) Arabian Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Dead Sea, Caspian Sea

Ans: Dead Sea

The Arabian Sea and Mediterranean Sea are connected to the oceans. The Dead Sea is actually a salt lake and not a sea connected to any ocean. Therefore, Dead Sea is the odd man out.

(3) Sri Lanka, India, Norway, Peru

Ans: Peru

Sri Lanka, India, and Norway are located in the Eastern Hemisphere. Peru is located in the Western Hemisphere. Therefore, Peru is the odd man out.

(4) Southern Ocean, Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Bay of Bengal

Ans: Bay of Bengal

The Southern Ocean, Indian Ocean, and Pacific Ocean are oceans. The Bay of Bengal is a part of the Indian Ocean and is not an ocean itself. Therefore, Bay of Bengal is the odd man out.

(5) Natural gas, salt, gold, manganese

Ans: Salt

Natural gas, gold, and manganese are mineral resources obtained from the ocean floor. Salt is obtained from seawater through evaporation. Therefore, salt is the odd man out.

(B) Write the answers.

(1) Which items does man get from the oceans?

Ans: We obtain salt, fish, shells, and various minerals such as iron, cobalt, manganese, and zinc from the oceans. We also get mineral oil and natural gas. Precious items like pearls and corals, as well as ornamental shells and some medicinal plants, are also obtained from the oceans.

(2) Why is it economic to carry out transport by waterways?

Ans: Transport by waterways is economical because it is cheaper than road or air transport. Large quantities of goods can be carried at one time. Ocean currents also help ships move faster and save fuel. Therefore, water transport is cost-effective.

(3) Why is there a difference in the climates of regions close to the oceans and regions far away from the oceans?

Ans: Regions close to the oceans have a moderate climate because water absorbs heat slowly and releases it slowly. Water vapour from the oceans mixes with the air and helps control temperature.

Regions far away from the oceans have less water vapour in the air. Therefore, they experience extreme temperatures, with very hot summers and very cold winters.

(4) Which continents are located along the coast of the Pacific Ocean?

Ans: The continents located along the coast of the Pacific Ocean are North America, South America, Asia, and Australia.
