(v) Helping farmers improve agriculture and livestock.

3. What is your opinion?
(1) The Gram Panchayat levies various taxes.
Ans: The Gram Panchayat looks after the administration and development of the village. It implements many welfare schemes and development programmes for the benefit of the villagers. For carrying out these activities, it requires funds. Therefore, the Gram Panchayat levies various taxes to raise the necessary money.
(2) The number of Zilla Parishads is less than the total number of districts in Maharashtra.
Ans: Every district generally has a Zilla Parishad. At present, Maharashtra has 36 districts but only 34 Zilla Parishads. This is because Mumbai City District and Mumbai Suburban District do not have rural areas. Therefore, Zilla Parishads are not established there.

(1) The Sarpanch
Ans:
(i) Elections to the Gram Panchayat are held every five years.
(ii) The elected members choose a Sarpanch and a Deputy Sarpanch from among themselves.
(iii) The meetings of the Gram Panchayat are conducted under the chairmanship of the Sarpanch.
(iv) It is the responsibility of the Sarpanch to implement the village development plans.
(v) If the Sarpanch does not perform his or her duties properly, the members can bring a motion of no confidence against him or her.
(vi) In the absence of the Sarpanch, the Deputy Sarpanch carries out the work of the Gram Panchayat.
